Anything you wanted to do but didn’t:

  • Visit a specific spot in the park
  • Take a particular photo
  • Spend time with a specific family member
  • Complete a personal challenge

Midday

Lunch

Use up remaining perishables. Simple is fine.

Begin Departure Prep

Use afternoon to start breaking camp:

  • Pack items you won’t need tonight
  • Organize what stays out vs. goes in
  • Clean interior of RV
  • Sort trash vs. take-home

What to leave out:

  • Sleeping gear (beds made until morning)
  • Tomorrow’s breakfast items
  • Toiletries
  • Clothes for evening and morning
  • Campfire supplies

Afternoon: Final Free Time

For Everyone

Last hours to:

  • Walk a favorite path one more
  • Sit in favorite chair looking at the view
  • Journal about the trip
  • Have conversations you’ve been putting off
  • Simply exist in this place

Gratitude Practice

Consider going around with:

  • One thing you’re grateful for about this trip
  • One thing you learned
  • One thing you want to remember
  • One thing you want to do next time

Evening: Farewell Dinner

Make It Special

This is the last meal together at camp. Options:

Option A: Best Meal of the Trip Pull out the stops:

  • Steaks, fresh sides
  • Dutch oven dessert
  • Whatever requires effort (you have time)

Option B: Meaningful Meal Something with significance:

  • Recipe from a grandparent’s past
  • Family traditional dish
  • Favorite meal as voted during the week

Option C: Collaborative Meal Everyone contributes:

  • Each person/family responsible for one component
  • Potluck style assembly
  • Everyone’s hands in the meal

During Dinner

  • Photos of the group at the table
  • Toasts and acknowledgments
  • Memory sharing
  • Thanks to whoever organized the trip
  • Anticipation of next time

Final Campfire

Building the Fire

Let someone who hasn’t done it build tonight’s fire:

  • Kid teaching opportunity
  • Passing of knowledge
  • Symbolic for closing the trip

Around the Fire

Structured (optional):

  • Each person shares a trip highlight
  • Funny moment awards
  • Most improved (fishing, hiking, card games)
  • Biggest surprise

Unstructured:

  • Let conversation flow
  • Tell stories
  • Sit in silence together
  • Let the fire speak

When to Extinguish

Don’t stay up too late:

  • Departure tomorrow requires energy
  • But don’t rush either
  • Let it end naturally

Extinguish completely: Water, stir, water again. Leave no trace.

Final Stargazing

One last look up.

What to Notice

  • Which constellations you can now find easily
  • How the sky has become familiar
  • The Milky Way you’ll remember
  • The silence you’ll miss

What to Say

Nothing, maybe. Just look.

Tonight’s Checklist

  • Packing well underway
  • Morning departure plan clear
  • What time leaving?
  • Who’s doing what tomorrow?
  • Fire completely out
  • Alarms set
  • One last look at the stars

The Last Night: Tomorrow you’ll be in transit, then home. Tonight is the last night of this particular adventure. There will never be another exactly like it—this group, this place, this week, this moment. Be present for it.
