Why a Rest Day

By Day 6:

  • Accumulated fatigue from the week
  • One more big day ahead (Day 7)
  • Departure prep mental overhead starting
  • Time to appreciate rather than accomplish

The goal today: Not having goals.

Morning: Permission to Be Lazy

Sleep In

No alarms. Natural wake-up. Coffee when you’re ready.

Slow Breakfast

Let it take two hours if it does:

  • Pancakes, eggs, bacon—the works
  • Multiple cups of coffee
  • Lingering conversation
  • Looking at the water

Morning Fishing (Optional)

For those who want to:

  • Shore fishing near camp
  • No pressure, no goals
  • Last chance to beat personal records
  • Or: Don’t fish. That’s fine too.

Midday

Lunch

Whatever’s easy. Whatever sounds good.

Extended Personal Time

1:00–4:00 PM is protected time for individuals:

Grandparents:

  • Napping
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Watching wildlife from camp chair

Parents:

  • Reading that book you brought
  • Quiet time as a couple
  • Actually relaxing (rare as parents)

Teens:

  • Hammock time
  • Photography
  • Journaling
  • Music (headphones)

Kids:

  • Supervised play
  • Art projects
  • Nature exploration nearby
  • Maybe even rest (one can hope)

Afternoon

Practical Tasks

Some logistics for end-of-trip:

  • Laundry at camper services (if needed)
  • Cooler organization/inventory
  • Meal planning for remaining days
  • Start thinking about pack-up

Optional: Wolf Center Visit

If you haven’t done it yet, afternoon is a good time for:

Optional: Final Marina Visit

Pick up souvenirs, supplies, or just explore if you haven’t yet.

Evening: Prime Stargazing

Setup

Tonight should be your best stargazing attempt:

  • By Day 6, you know the best viewing spot in camp
  • Evening is planned around dark-sky time
  • Weather patterns observed all week (pick clear night)

Dinner First

Eat before full darkness. Set up stargazing area.

Viewing Plan

See Stargazing Guide for details.

Tonight’s targets:

  • Milky Way (full arc if visible)
  • Specific constellations you’ve been learning
  • Planets (if positioned well)
  • Meteor watching
  • Deep sky objects with binoculars

Duration: Stay out as long as interest holds. No school tomorrow.

Making It Special

  • Blankets for lying back
  • Hot chocolate or warm drinks
  • Quiet conversation
  • Let the kids stay up (within reason)
  • No phones (light pollution)

Reflection Time

Day 6 is naturally reflective. The trip is winding down.

Conversation Starters

  • What will you remember most?
  • What surprised you?
  • What would you do differently?
  • What should we do next year?

For Kids

  • Draw your favorite moment
  • Make a trip gratitude list
  • Write a “postcard” to yourself about the trip
  • Start a memory project

Tonight’s Checklist

  • Enjoy the stars
  • Begin mental prep for departure
  • Rest well for final full day
  • Appreciate where you are

Don’t Fill Every Moment: The temptation on Day 6 is to cram in “one more thing.” Resist. The empty space is where memories solidify and relationships deepen. Boredom at camp is not failure—it’s success.
